Description

Riccia fluitans, also known as floating crystalwort, is a unique aquatic plant belonging to the liverwort genus Riccia. This intriguing floating plant is highly sought after by aquarists for its ability to provide a safe retreat for young fry and shrimp and create an excellent environment in live-bearing tanks.

Care

  • Water Conditions: Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 8.0, and a temperature between 72°F (22°C) to 82°F (28°C).
  • Lighting: Position Riccia fluitans in well-lit areas with moderate to high light intensity. Adequate lighting is essential for its growth and development.
  • Substrate: No substrate is required, as this plant floats on the water surface.

Propagation

Riccia fluitans propagates naturally by fragmentation. Simply remove a small piece of the mature plant and place it in your aquarium to allow it to establish new roots and grow into a new plant.

Additional Information

  • Growth Rate: Riccia fluitans grows relatively quickly, forming thick mats on and under the water surface in its natural habitat.
  • Compatibility: It is generally compatible with most aquatic plants and fish species. However, be mindful of larger, aggressive fish that may damage or uproot the delicate floating plants.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean any debris accumulated on the plant to prevent the buildup of algae and unwanted organisms. Prune as necessary to maintain desired size and shape.
