Description
Elodea canadensis is a fast-growing plant native to North America. It is undemanding and subdivides regularly. This is a great plant to keep your tank water clean as it absorbs a high amount of excess nutrients.
When grown in dark and muddy conditions, the Elodea canadensis will grow more compact, as you may see in lakes. If it is near gravel, you will sometimes even see a root grow out to reach the substrate!
This plant should not be confused with Brazilian Elodea (Egeria densa). The Brazilian Elodea is considered highly invasive in North America whereas Elodea canadensis is native to Canada. Still, as these plants can grow rather quickly, we should still be careful not to introduce any aquatic plants to water bodies and waterways.
