Description
We’re excited to introduce you to the stunning Marsilea crenata. This attractive aquatic fern is a fantastic addition to any aquascape or water garden.
Appearance and Characteristics
Marsilea crenata boasts beautiful green leaves with a unique straight marbling pattern. The plant grows to approximately 1 inch in height and spreads out over the substrate. Each node usually will sprout with one leaf, but depending on the substrate and water characteristics, they could have 3 or 4 leaves on each stem.
Ideal Care Conditions
To ensure the health and vitality of your Marsilea crenata, provide it with a nutrient-rich substrate and maintain moderate to high light levels.
Water Parameters
Optimal water parameters for Marsilea crenata include:
- pH: 6.0 – 8.0
- Temperature: 64°F (18°C) – 82°F (28°C)
- Hardness (GH): 3-15 dGH
- Lighting: Moderate to high light intensity
Propagation
Marsilea crenata propagates by rhizomes and can easily be rooted from cuttings. To propagate, simply cut a piece of the rhizome and place the roots below with the leaves above the substrate. The plant will begin sending runners within one or two weeks, and you will see new growth rather quickly with sufficient substrate nutrient and lighting.
Important Notes
- Marsilea crenata can be quite aggressive when grown in ideal conditions and may outcompete other aquatic plants. Careful monitoring of plant density is recommended to maintain a balanced and thriving aquascape.
- If left unchecked, Marsilea crenata may form dense mats that can block light penetration to the leaves below and affect water quality. Regular pruning is advised for maintaining optimal growth conditions.
