Description
This delicate and graceful plant is a wonderful addition to any freshwater or paludarium setup. We call it the “crunchy glass” plant due to it’s crispy brittle feeling and slightly transparent leaves.
Monosolenium tenerum is a fine-leaved floating liverwort, native to east Asia. It is characterized by its delicate, flat, and simple shape. It divides and grows into a cluster making an elegant and dense ball. The leaves are dark green and have a wavy edge, adding an elegant touch to your aquascape.
Care Instructions
- Monosolenium tenerum thrives best in a well-established, nutrient-rich aquatic environment with pH between 6.0 – 7.5.
- Moderate lighting is sufficient, ideally 2-4 watts per gallon of tank space. It prefers indirect light, as too much light may cause it to melt away.
- Maintain water temperature between 72°F (22°C) and 82°F (28°C).
- Regularly trim the fronds to encourage new growth and prevent overgrowth.
Propagation
Monosolenium tenerum can be easily propagated simply by dividing the leaf and attaching it to decoration or substrate filled with aquatic soil, peat moss, or gravel. While it does well in low light, ensure it still has some light instead of complete darkness. Nutrient-rich water greatly helps with proper growth.
Important Notes
- Be mindful that this delicate plant and can break apart easily. However, they broken pieces will usually form a new cluster where it settles. Make sure the broken off pieces are gathered in the right place if you want it to stay in one spot.
- As with most new additions to your aquascape, introduce Monosolenium tenerum gradually to minimize stress on the plant and your existing aquatic life. Sudden pH swings will cause stress.
