Water Lettuce

Description

Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is a fantastic floating plant that is widely loved for its practical utility in managing aquarium water quality. Naturally found in slow-moving or stagnant waters across South America, Africa, and Asia, it serves as a natural biological filter, absorbing excess nitrates and nutrients while its long, trailing roots provide excellent cover for fish fry and shrimp.

Care

Maintain this plant in freshwater aquariums or ponds with water temperatures between 21°C and 27°C (70-80°F) and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Provide moderate to high lighting positioned directly above. It is critical to ensure the tops of the leaves remain completely dry; use open-top tanks or ensure adequate ventilation to prevent condensation from dripping onto the foliage and causing rot.

Propagation

Water Lettuce propagates naturally and rapidly via stolons (runners). Simply snip or pinch the connecting stem to separate the small daughter plants from the mother plant once they form their own root systems.

Trimming

Actively manage and cull the population, as it multiplies quickly and can cover the entire surface, blocking gas exchange and light for submerged plants. Trim long roots if they become too dense or tangle with other plants.
