Description

Ceratopteris thalictroides, commonly known as water sprite, is a widespread species found in tropical and subtropical regions. It has delicate, feathery leaves that add elegance to any aquatic environment.

Care

Water Sprite grows best in water with a pH reading of 6 to 7.5 and high amounts of light. It can benefit from the addition of CO2, but not required. This plant is easy to care for does best in medium to high lighting conditions.

Propagation

Propagation of water sprite involves trimming stems at the base of the leaf. The original plant will continue growing from where it was cut, and may even create multiple branches. The cut leaves can be planted or floated, where new roots will begin to form. If you have large bushy growth, you may gently pull the leaves apart and the roots may separate, allowing for faster propagation.

Notes, Tips, Considerations

  • It’s essential to provide enough light and nutrients for the plant to adjust to it’s new water conditions.
  • This plant does well in stable water conditions (without pH swings), as well as slightly acidic water.
  • If the plant is getting enough light but still turning yellow or brown, it may be due to a nutrient deficiency. Measure the nitrate level using a multi-test strip and dose with all-in-one fertilizers until the water has 20-50 ppm nitrate.

Trimming

Trimming water sprite involves pruning off the top portion of the plant if it becomes too tall or the bottom half loses its leaves. Replant the trimmed section in another location.

The water sprite is an excellent addition to any aquarium, providing a touch of elegance and versatility. Its low-maintenance nature makes it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
